II always thought that when different arts mix together and combine their powers, they become even stronger, to bring a feeling, a message to people; and in a way they complement each other to the ultimate goal of "touching" the public in a different, broader way. The most known and maybe most successful of these art mixtures is Opera. Also Art Songs are a refine combination of poetry and music.
When Tomie asked me to join the "Resonance 1" project (a collaboration between music and paintings) I had the possibility to experiment this "communion" again, which I already experienced several times before: the exposition Partita in 2008, Setsuko in 2010, and later in 2011 when Izumi Tateno asked me to compose a piece of around 20 min. for piano 3 hands. Since he gave me complete freedom in choosing the form and content of the piece, I decided to put music to 4 very different paintings (by M. Escher, Rousseau, Goya and Kandinsky).
Interesting was that this 4 pieces ("Four Musical Paintings" as I named it) inspired Tomie-san to create her own version of the same works; so that the paintings became music and that music became paintings again.
While "Plastic Arts" once made, generally, remains in the space, music is a transitory art , it passes quickly and disappears immediately once the sounds fade out. So it means that the listener enjoys music only as it is sounding and passing in time. The whole "Musical Piece of Art" can be appreciated only after is performed as a total composition (or a part of a composition).
This combination between paintings and music can be very interesting and not yet so much exploited.
I am definitely going to write more compositions following this path... During the exposition somebody gave me this suitable Zen phrase by Daitoh-Kokushi:

"You really attain enlightenment when you look by ears and hear by eyes"

Pablo Escande
